What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and how is it different from SEO?

More and more buyers no longer scroll through ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overview a question and act on the answer. If your business isn't part of that answer, you're invisible to them — no matter how well you rank in classic search. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you fix that.

What is GEO?

GEO is the practice of optimising your content and your web presence so that generative AI engines — the systems that write answers rather than list links — mention, cite, and recommend your business.

Where traditional SEO asks "how do I rank on Google's results page?", GEO asks "how do I become the source an AI quotes when someone asks about my industry?" The two overlap, but they are not the same game.

How GEO differs from SEO

Search engine optimization and generative engine optimization share a foundation, but they reward different things.

  • The unit of success is different. SEO wins a ranking position. GEO wins a citation or a mention inside a generated answer.
  • Structure matters more. AI engines extract facts. Clear headings, direct answers, definitions, lists, and FAQ-style content are easier to lift into an answer than dense marketing prose.
  • Entities matter more. AI systems build a model of who you are — your name, what you do, where you operate. Consistent structured data (like Organization and LocalBusiness schema) and consistent information across the web strengthen that model.
  • Being quoted beats being clicked. In SEO a click is the goal. In GEO the answer may resolve without a click, so the goal shifts to being named as the trusted source.

What GEO and SEO still share

GEO is not a replacement for SEO — it's a layer on top of a healthy SEO base. Both depend on:

  • Content that genuinely answers the question a real person asked.
  • A technically sound, fast, crawlable website.
  • Credibility signals: a real business, real expertise, consistent details.

If your SEO foundation is broken, GEO has nothing to stand on.

How to make your business easier for AI engines to cite

Here is what actually moves the needle, in rough priority order:

  1. Answer real questions directly. Lead with the answer, then explain. AI engines favour content that states a clear position up front.
  2. Add structured data. Mark up your organisation, your services, your articles, and your FAQs with schema.org JSON-LD so machines can read your facts unambiguously.
  3. Be consistent everywhere. Your business name, address, and description should match across your site, your Google Business Profile, and directories. Contradictions weaken the AI's confidence in you.
  4. Publish genuine expertise. Depth, specifics, and first-hand experience are hard to fake and easy for engines to reward. Thin, generic content gets ignored.
  5. Allow the AI crawlers. Make sure your robots rules don't accidentally block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended, and consider an llms.txt file that points them at your best content.
  6. Earn mentions elsewhere. AI answers are shaped by what the wider web says about you, not just your own site. Genuine coverage and citations still count.

Should you care about GEO right now?

If your customers are the kind of people who ask an AI assistant before they buy — and that group is growing fast in India — then yes. GEO is early enough that the businesses investing now are building an advantage that compounds. It's late enough that ignoring it means ceding the answer to a competitor.

The honest summary: do your SEO properly, then add GEO on top. They feed each other. A fast, well-structured, credible site with clear answers and clean structured data is the site that both Google and the AI engines want to surface.
